Returning to the workforce
We deliver the following content via workshops and/or coaching session(s).
For those returning to the workforce – regain your confidence
This is designed for both women and men who are returning to the workforce after a period of being at home looking after children.
Our experience in working in this area is that, whether the reason for returning is career or financially driven, individuals can find this step daunting.
It is not uncommon to feel a loss of confidence as result of being away for a period of time. Thoughts and feelings may include being out of touch or behind in skill level, or even questioning whether their skills are still relevant. Some may start to question whether they will fit in and adapt to a workplace environment while juggling their responsibilities at home. Added to this is, after having a period away from work, they may question if their work interests remain as they were.
There are some who have been out of the workforce for several years and these individuals may struggle at the prospect of going back to work and how to best go about it. They may be asking questions such as:
- “Is now the right time to go back to work?”
- “Should I look for part-time or full-time work?”
- “Where do I start?”
- “How can I update my skills when I don’t have the time or money to retrain?”
- “Do others understand the struggles I face?”
- “How do I resolve my guilt at leaving my child(ren) behind?”
- “Will my child(ren) feel rejected?”
- “How will I juggle everything?”
Does this sound familiar to you? These are all valid questions.
It is amazing how assessing your situation and creating a plan can answer some of those questions, begin to remove barriers and put you on the path to returning to work more confidently. A career re-entry strategy will assist you in transitioning your thinking and you will begin gathering your confidence. We will assist you where required to:
- Assess your reasons for returning
- Understand the impact on your child(ren) and your partner
- Identify what you want from your career/work
- Identify the key changes to take into account
- Assess your career including:
- Identifying your skills including those new ones you now have from bringing up children
- Work interests
- Your values and drivers
- Your past and recent achievements
- Your ideal role
- Your working style and needs
- Stress and its impact
- Work life balance
- Positioning your CV
- Interview strategies
- Importance of networking
- Getting the best out of recruiters
A successful return to work doesn’t need to be daunting and doesn’t need to be done on your own. Like parenting, it will take time, effort, patience and at times a bit of help just to ensure you are on the right track. And, the results can be very rewarding.
