Career Development for the 55+ age group

We deliver these coaching sessions, both face-to-face or via electronic media:

In working with many people aged 55+, we are very familiar with the particular needs, issues and frustrations that this group of people can face in terms of gaining their next role, especially if their role has been disestablished.

Often people of this age group suggest that employers and sometimes recruiters are not overly interested in employing them and hence feel despondent.

Our sessions explore the issues and challenges you face and provide strategies and tools from a career perspective that identify the uniqueness of your skills, experience and achievements that you have to offer and explore a variety of work options.  We also provide strategies for writing a CV that highlights these elements and strategies that will provide you with confidence in an interview.  And

Life after sport  – Career transition for Professional Sportspeople

We deliver our following Career Transition services via  coaching and/or workshops sessions, both in person or via electronic media:

How many professional sportspeople think about what their career might look like after their professional sporting days are over?  Many are focused on either building up or enjoying their sport, and it is not until an injury or retirement sees them ending their sporting career, that they turn their minds to life after their sport.

We assist sportspeople to identify their transferable skills and show them how they can be used and marketed in a different way.  This opens up a range of work/career options that align with their skills, interests and motivations.   Our coaching and/or workshop session(s) assist sportspeople to gain confidence that there is a life after sport and how they can work towards this and explore their options.

An option: Financial Coaching is a useful compliment to career transition

Financial coaching is personalised to meet individual needs and can be particularly useful if there is a material change in income. Personal financial security can enable you to focus on achieving your career objectives and the lifestyle that you would like for your family and yourself.

Careers can be impacted by concerns about personal financial circumstances.  This is no reflection on individuals, but rather, it is a statement about the lack of basic financial education publicly available.

We offer individual financial coaching which can include such topics as:

Our coaching is personalised to meet the specific needs of each individual.

Financial Seminars: Can also be arranged on request.

Our financial coach, Craig Wylie, is an Authorised Financial Adviser.  He, and C2 Consulting, are independent of any investment or insurance product providers.

  • Managing your career

Workshops: Are 6 hours duration.  An additional 2 hours is added if the “Financially Fit and Healthy” workshop option is included.

Coaching :   Is on an hourly basis with the number of hours dependent on individual requirements.

An option: Financial Coaching is a useful compliment to Career Development

It has been suggested that staff members’ focus and productivity, and thus their careers, can be impacted by concerns about their personal financial circumstances.  This is no reflection on the staff member, but rather, it is a statement about the lack of basic financial education publically available.

There is an increasing interest, by employers, in providing some basic financial literacy awareness as they appreciate the positive impact for both the employing organisation and the staff member.

We are able to offer individual financial coaching which might include such topics as:

  • Finding the financial balance between lifestyle today and lifestyle tomorrow
  • How to create and maintain a financial plan over time
  • How to minimise the impact of “Life events”
  • Savings and investments – what to look for and how to manage the risk/return trade-off
  • Guide to dealing with everyday financial decisions

Our coaching is personalised to meet the specific needs of the staff member concerned.

Our financial coach, Craig Wylie, is an Authorised Financial Adviser.  He, and C2 Consulting, are independent of any investment or insurance product providers.  More information here.

Life after professional rugby

The Hurricanes franchise is a valued client of ours.  The guys themselves are great to work with.

At the start of another session working with the team, Cynthia delivered a course entitled “Life after rugby” this workshop started the process of working through options for the guys once their professional playing days cease or if, unfortunately, they are injured and aren’t able to return to professional playing.

Here is a photo of Cynthia with some of the Hurricanes squad courtesy of NZ Rugby World (Issue 179 April/May 2016).  This group were the new members of the Hurricanes family.

Career Development for Women

We deliver our following Career Development services via workshops and/or coaching sessions, both in person or via electronic media:

We explore the issues and challenges women can come across in their careers.  The session provides suggestions that encourage women to look at how they can progress well in their careers, while often managing multiple roles outside of their work environment:

  • Challenges, issues and barriers facing women
  • Solutions to overcoming issues
  • Work/life balance
  • Ways your employer can assist you to progress
  • Strengths – those skills which you are good at and enjoy using
  • Values – the beliefs and motivators that provide you with purpose and meaning
  • Work interests
  • Job satisfaction and enjoyment
  • Achievements – how do you make a difference to your organisation
  • Development needs and goals
  • Learning needs and plans
  • Internal and external career options
  • Your brand and reputation
  • 360 feedback and why this is important
  • Networking for success
  • Work/career aspirations that you want to pursue
  • Industry/sector and organisation preferences
  • Managing your career

A selection of comments from workshop attendees is here.

Workshops: Are offered as either 4 or 6 hours.  The longer session provides more time for group interaction which participants see as a very valuable part of the workshops.

We offer an optional extension to our Career Development workshops – our “Financially Fit and Healthy” presentation. Overseas studies have shown that there is a strong link between career development and personal financial security.

It has been suggested that an individual’s focus and productivity, and thus their career, can be impacted by concerns about their personal financial circumstances.  This is no reflection on the individual, but rather, it is a statement about the lack of basic financial education publically available. There is an increased interest, by employers, in providing some basic financial literacy awareness as they appreciate the positive impact for both the employing organisation and the staff member.

This presentation is by Craig Wylie, a Principal of C2 Consulting and an Authorised Financial Adviser.  He, and C2 Consulting, are independent of any investment or insurance product providers.  More information here.  An additional 2 hours is added to the workshop if this option is selected.  Alternatively, we can tailor a shorter presentation to suit the attendees.

Coaching :   Is on an hourly basis with the number of hours dependent on individual requirements.

A selection of comments from Career Development workshop attendees

What was most valuable?

  • Identifying values – helped to identify type of role/environment most suitable to me. And talking about achievements – not something I usually think about.  Interesting to hear what skills people identify
  • A lot of personalised information to take away and work/reflect on. Looking at my achievements and the relevant skills
  • Broad range of information and points to think about; really nice presentation
  • Taking the time out to think this through with the support of the structured approach
  • Time dedicated to personal strengths and values; how to process and what’s next; different tools to identify overlapping themes; input form other workshop participants
  • The preparation prior to the workshop was useful in terms of time and how the mind was attuned in this way; Cynthia manages to give some one-to-one feedback in the group

What will you do differently as result of this workshop?

  • Think about values and how this will influence career decisions rather than just strategic choices
  • Think more about networking for roles rather than being stuck in the traditional way
  • Totally reassessing career, changing focus, development
  • My CV
  • Look more at my internal options as on reflection my organisation is a pretty good place
  • Reflect and articulate next steps
  • Go through the booklet and have an action plan

Ageing workforce – working positively with the 50+ age group

Strategies for managers

We deliver this service via seminar:

The ageing workforce is a very topical issue internationally and nationally both from employers’ and  older workers’ perspectives.

Statistics reveal that by 2031, the number of New Zealanders aged 65 and over is expected to exceed one million, nearly double the current number.  They also reveal an increase in the labour force participation of older people from 16% in 2010 to 26% by 2030.  What are the challenges and economic benefits of this?

This seminar is designed for those organisations who are looking to creating policies around the older workforce and for those managers who want to have productive conversations with their older workers.

The seminar is in two parts:

Retirement – what does it mean for organisations, and their older workforce?

The current demographics and their implications

  • Workforce planning, strategies and suggested actions
  • Design/update policies and procedures
    • Identify and develop processes and tools
    • Conduct a workforce and process analysis
    • Choose the right knowledge system
    • Engage the workforce
    • Performance management and career conversations
    • Transition to retirement
    • Flexible working approach
    • Role of learning and development
  • Retirement best practice

Turning difficult retirement conversations into productive conversations

  • Broach the retirement conversation positively
  • Develop frameworks for enabling discussions
    • Elements of an informal and informal discussion
    • The performance discussion
  • Improve commitment, motivation and capability
  • The development conversation
  • The difficult (courageous) conversation
    • Critical coaching skills
